I realised that in everything that has been going on since Dad’s funeral - being diagnosed with MS has been a blur of everything happening so fast, on top of all the other ‘stuff’ that follows the loss of a parent - that I never got around to writing to you as I had planned. So, now I am, and I have my Mum, Adele’s, consent and blessings for you to use this testimonial if you wish, for public use.

As someone who had previously worked in Funeral Services (Death Care) a long time ago and having worked with Rod during that time, when the sad time came to honour, celebrate the life of and say farewell to my own Father, Clive, in June 2023, I knew there was only one celebrant I trusted and had the confidence in, for this incredibly precious and difficult time in my families life.

Rod has such a unique gift. To hear him speak with such warmth, and attention to detail, it’s hard to realise that he never actually knew the person or their loved ones. He is the master of personal touches and filling a room with such an energy of compassion, warmth and true honour for the life lived by whomever he is paying tribute to.

Also as someone who has experience in funerals and death, I wasn’t expecting how difficult and very different this process of arranging Dad’s funeral would actually be for me. I am truly thankful that Rod shared with me his own lived experience from the moment he walked in the door, that this was a VERY different experience - and totally uncharted territory, even for ‘us professionals’. During the service, we cried a lot but we also laughed, loved and felt such pride in a life well lived - and my beautiful Mum even was comfortable enough to heckle a cheeky comment at one stage back at Rod.

This speaks volumes - more than I could ever find words to express. Losing my ‘Dadio’ was one of the worst moments of my life - actually having to say goodbye was devastatingly hard to face, but thanks to everyone that was involved, especially Rod, we still reflect on his service, months later and undoubtedly in the future, with a sense of joy mixed into our sadness of this really tough day. It was almost impossible to please my Father but we have all agreed that not even he could have found a fault in his ‘last hoorah’.

Thank you Rod, for helping us to achieve the impossible. And also for being such a supportive friend and colleague during my own time long before Dad’s passing. I wish I could say I hope to see you & catch up again soon…… but no, we don’t want to keep meeting like this.

Just a note to thank you for the wonderful service that you conducted for my brother Errol. Never did we think that we would be able to give him such a send-off. We really appreciated everything that you did.

When Garry, Tracey and I went back to our hotel and had a drink in the bar, a butterfly settled on a cushion beside me. Despite Garry moving the cushion to sit next to me it didn’t move. It was only when we got up to leave that it flew onto a curtain and watched us. It was the colours we had never seen before, and the Staff said that they had never had it happen before.

Everyone tells me that it was a message from Errol that he was ok. I did say in my letter to him that he was free to fly.

Thanks again, Rod. In the nicest way I hope that we don’t see you for some time, unless it is for a wedding.

You are still ‘the best in the business’ - which was how I always recommended you to my clients ‘back in the day’.

My Uncle Paul’s ‘eulogy’ was NOT the one he had read out to me and I am sure someone had sent him the one that Mum and I wrote together!!! That was a moment - the sight of you checking your iPad was unforgettable. 😂

But you worked your magic and EVERY word you spoke was PERFECT.

You even got ‘heckled’ by my Mum - you can’t imagine how special that was - that was a symbol of just how comfortable she was around you and how much she truly enjoyed your words.

I can’t believe that my own father’s funeral - and being amongst you and Angela (I adore that woman!) has rekindled how much I miss and loved working in the industry. It’s such and honour and privilege that I have carried with me all these years. But boy has it changed! For the BETTER! I am so impressed with everything !!!

Thank you - I can’t find words more that that - pretty rare for me! 😂

I and my family are extremely grateful for the way you conducted the service for Alan’s funeral. It was all that I had hoped for, being sad but also informally happy; we could concentrate on remembering Alan only as he was, without the devastating changes at the end of his life. You found the perfect mix of words to encompass Alan’s and my wishes and our strongly Church based childhood, but later move away from it. You enabled me to say my words of remembrance without tears. I had been uncertain about the younger children being with us but afterwards realised that they too would have good memories of the funeral. We spent the rest of the day as a family, frequently recalling past memories of Alan.

Very many thanks. I hope my own funeral may be a similar one. It made a great difference meeting you beforehand, learning that you are an identical twin with connections to Cloncurry.

I hope you and your family have a very Happy Christmas, that you have a joyful reunion with your twin brother and that 2023 is a more peaceful and healthy year for everyone.

We said that we didn’t want anyone, as the celebrant, who would be dry and stuffy, but someone who would give life to the service, which is what you did. You were interesting, injecting just the right amount of humour, whilst, at all times, remaining respectful. Your Reflective Thoughts were most apt and very touching, thank you.

We also greatly appreciate the advice you gave us before the funeral, both with regard to the music, and also to techniques to use to enable us to cope throughout the service itself. While none of the three of us thought about any members of the congregation as being naked while we were doing our speaking (which was one of your suggested techniques), we did do deep breathing and made sure we didn’t touch each other; your standing behind us, giving us support and whispered advice, was also calming and most helpful.

We have received very many complimentary comments regarding the service, one person even saying that it was the most beautiful funeral she’d ever attended; your conduct of the service definitely helped to produce this feeling of comfort and well-being.

Thank you for helping us to honour the memory of our beloved mother in such a positive way.

Thank you so much for the wonderful service you put together for our darling Mum, Rita. When we met with you, you said that it would be warm and sincere....and so it was. I think Mother would have been very pleased with the send-off we gave her.

So many people commented afterwards about how lovely it was and one 'older' cousin was heard to say "when my turn comes, I want him!".

I won't go into too much detail but it was a relief to all of us when Mum finally closed her eyes for the last time and I don't think it has actually hit us yet that we're not going to see her beautiful face again but we'll have the memories of that lovely final goodbye to carry us through.

Many thanks once again. We will be more than happy to recommend you to friends and family who are looking for an excellent celebrant.
